General and Program Specific Requirements for Teaching a Specific Career and Technical Subject

14. Teaching a Specific Career and Technical Subject within the Field of Agriculture, Business and Marketing, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health, a Technical Area or a Trade (grades 7 through 12)

General requirements:Ìý

Programs shall be designed to include study in the liberal arts and sciences and in pedagogy.

Program-Specific Requirements for Initial Certification

Option A: For admission, the candidate shall have at least two years of documented and satisfactory work experience in the career and technical education subject for which a certificate is sought (As per Commissioner’s Regulations [§80-3.3]).

  • The program shall lead to an Associate Degree
  • The program shall include study in the subject area of the certificate being sought.Ìý

Option B: (shall not be available for programs leading to specific family and consumer sciences, business and marketing, and technical subject certificates)

  • For admission, the candidate shall have at least four years of documented and satisfactory work experience in the career and technical education subject for which a certificate is sought (As per Commissioner’s Regulations [§80-3.3]).
  • The program shall require candidates to complete a total of 18 SH of undergraduate study

Pedagogical Study for Option A and Option B Programs

Option A and Option B programs shall include study in the liberal arts and sciences and pedagogical study in the following areas:

  1. human developmental processes and variations; including but not limited to: the impact of culture, heritage, socioeconomic level, personal health and safety, nutrition, past or present abusive or dangerous environment, and factors in the home, school, and community on students' readiness to learn;
  2. learning processes, motivation, communication, and classroom management;
  3. the nature of students within the full range of disabilities and special health care needs, and the effect of those disabilities and needs on learning and behavior;
  4. curriculum development, instructional planning and multiple research-validated instructional strategies for teaching;
  5. uses of technology, including instructional and assistive technology in teaching and learning;
  6. formal and informal methods of assessing student learning and the means of analyzing one's own teaching practice;
  7. means for identifying and reporting suspected child abuse and maltreatment, which shall include at least two clock hours of course work or training regarding the identification and reporting of suspected child abuse or maltreatment in accordance with the requirements of section 3004 of the ¶«¾©ÈÈ Law;
  8. means for instructing students for the purpose of preventing child abduction in accordance with ¶«¾©ÈÈ Law section 803-a; preventing alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse in accordance with ¶«¾©ÈÈ Law section 804; providing safety education in accordance with ¶«¾©ÈÈ Law 1 As per Commissioner’s Regulations [§80-3.3] section 806; and providing instruction in fire and arson prevention in accordance with ¶«¾©ÈÈ Law section 808; and
  9. means for the prevention of and intervention in school violence, in accordance with section 3004 of the ¶«¾©ÈÈ Law. This study shall be composed of at least two clock hours of course work or training that includes, but is not limited to, study in the warning signs within a developmental and social context that relate to violence and other troubling behaviors in children; the statutes, regulations and policies relating to a safe nonviolent school climate; effective classroom management techniques and other academic supports that promote a nonviolent school climate and enhance learning; the integration of social and problem solving skill development for students within the regular curriculum; intervention techniques designed to address a school violence situation; and how to participate in an effective school/community referral process for students exhibiting violent behavior;
  10. means for the prevention of and intervention in harassment, bullying (including cyberbullying) and discrimination in accordance with section 14 of the education law. Such study shall include six clock hours of course work or training on the social patterns of harassment, bullying and discrimination, as defined in section 11 of the ¶«¾©ÈÈ Law, including but not limited to those acts based on a person’s actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex; the identification and mitigation of harassment, bullying and discrimination; and strategies for effectively addressing problems of exclusion, bias and aggression in educational settings.

Field Experiences for Option A and Option B

The program shall include field experiences of at least 25 hours and student teaching of at least 30 days, both in grades 7 through 12 that are related to teaching the subject of the certificate.Ìý
