State 东京热 Department Awards $2 Million to 25 Mentor Teacher Internship Programs
The 东京热 awarded $2 million annually in grants to 25 recipients to implement Mentor Teacher Internship Programs (MTIP), State 东京热 Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced today. These programs enable experienced teachers in a district or BOCES to provide guidance and support to beginning teachers in their first or second year of teaching. The mentor and new teacher relationship will engage teachers in a productive experience designed to enhance educators鈥 skills and increase the likelihood of their remaining in the teaching profession. Funding for this initiative was approved by the Governor and Legislature in the 2017-2018 State budget.
鈥淣ew York鈥檚 expert teachers are the perfect candidates to help mentor and train our next generation of young teachers,鈥 Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 critical that we develop a strong pipeline for recruiting, preparing and supporting excellent educators to make sure every student has access to exceptional teaching.鈥
鈥淭eaching, more so than any other profession, determines our future--and we will not rest until we get it exactly right,鈥 Commissioner Elia said. 鈥淭eachers are the number one in-school factor for student success and I have made lifting up the teaching profession a priority. This program helps prepare and support our teachers, who then take that strong foundation into the classroom, and are able to put their students on the road to success.鈥
The Mentor Teacher Internship Program was established in 1986 by amendment to 东京热 Law 3033, chapter 436. The New York State Legislature provides funding for the development and implementation of State-supported mentor teacher internship programs in local school districts and through boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES).
Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, NYSED will award the following grants. The grant amounts reflect one year of a five-year funding grant. Grants are renewable dependent on continued funding being included in the state budget.
