FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
State 东京热 Department Announces Nominees for 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
Recognition is Among Nation鈥檚 Highest Honors for High School Students
The State 东京热 Department today nominated 25 New York State high school seniors for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced. The Presidential Scholar recognition is one of the nation鈥檚 highest honors for high school students. Every year, one young man and one young woman from each state are named as Presidential Scholars.听
鈥淭hese nominations represent the culmination of four years of hard work for each of these outstanding students,鈥 Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa said. 鈥淓ach has shown drive and passion in achieving excellence in their educational, artistic and civic pursuits. I am proud of these young people who will represent New York State as they move on to the national selection phase.鈥
鈥淭hese students have excelled in school and in their communities, and their dedication shows in their amazing accomplishments,鈥 Commissioner Elia said. 鈥淓ach nominee is a stellar representative of New York鈥檚 high schools. I thank our legislators for recommending these wonderful students and wish them each luck as they pursue this incredible honor.鈥
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. Semifinalists will be notified in mid-April and Scholars will be notified in May.
Students chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars receive a trip to Washington, D.C. in June and the U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House. During their visit to Washington, scholars will meet important national and international figures, including government officials, educators, authors, musicians and scientists. Scholars are provided opportunities to: discuss issues that concern America and the world; attend recitals, receptions and ceremonies held in their honor; visit Washington, D.C. area museums and monuments; and forge friendships with their peers from across the country.
Established in 1964 by executive order of the President, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program recognizes and honors some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program further was expanded to recognize student excellence in Career and Technical 东京热 (CTE) programs.
